Living a Purposeful Life

An Online Group

This group is for those of you who have been diagnosed with a health condition or medical illness, that is ongoing resulting in chronic or intermittent symptoms, and thus far has served little purpose but to interfere with the richness of life.  You may have good days, and most certainly have bad days.  It may be difficult for you to fathom moving forward with your life either alongside or in spite of your symptoms, necessary modifications, and diagnosis.  You may struggle with your own identity, not knowing who you are underneath the “unwellness” and, perhaps, cling to either the idea of what life was like before you were sick and/or in pain, or the unrealistic version of the life you hoped to live.  In other words, you may be stuck in a horrible rut, believing life is “all downhill from here.”  This group is a venue for hope, and, ultimately, for developing a new identity that will lead you to living a purposeful life despite your physical limitations and/or pain.

Each week you or another member will be invited to share thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams.  You will also be invited to listen, mindfully, to the stories of others. Journaling exercises and art will be assigned in an effort to help you, and the other members of this group, explore and uncover the personal truths about yourself, clarify how you want your life to unfold, set goals, and create a plan to bring those goals to fruition.  There is room for grief (and all its necessary emotions) in this group.  There is also room for hope, and for exploring the possibility of living a life of purpose (even from bed).

Being CHRONICALLY UNWELL often affords one the opportunity to create a story about life, which very often becomes a negative narrative. This group offers you the opportunity to step outside of isolation and just show up as you are—even if it is from your bed. . With Dana’s facilitation, support, and empathy, you and the other group members will work to identify the story you have been telling yourself, and how it came to be.  You will be given the opportunity to connect with other people who want to invent or reinvent their lives while tapping into the deepest, wisest part of who they are, despite their physical condition, stigma, and labels. You will be invited to listen to the stories of others, tell yours, and “write” the next chapter of your life—one that does not focus, solely, on being ill.
